Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
What does “Uile-bheist” mean and how do you pronounce it? “Uile-bheist” (pronounced Ewl-uh-Vesht) is Scottish Gaelic for “monster.” The name is inspired by the myths, legends, and folklore of the Highlands, specifically the first recorded sighting of the “water monster” in the River Ness by Saint Columba in 565 AD.
Where is Uile-bheist located? We are located in the heart of Inverness at Ness Bank, Inverness, IV2 4SG, right on the banks of the River Ness.
What is a “Brewstillery”? Uile-bheist is Scotland’s first and only “Brewstillery”—a combined craft brewery and whisky distillery. We produce both artisanal Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky and a range of craft beers under one roof.
Tours & Experiences
Do I need to book a tour in advance? While walk-ins may be accommodated if space is available, we highly recommend booking in advance, especially during the summer, to ensure your preferred time slot. Tours can be booked directly through our website.
What types of tours do you offer? We offer a range of experiences from entry-level introduction tours to expert-led master maker sessions. Our standard Discovery Tour shares our story, our spirit-making process, and includes a taste of our brewing.
Are children allowed on the tours? Yes, children are welcome on the tours, though they must be accompanied by an adult. Please note that the legal drinking age in the UK is 18, so tastings are strictly for adults only.
Sustainability & Production
How is Uile-bheist sustainable? Sustainability is at our core. We are one of the lowest carbon distilleries in the world. We use an innovative water-source heat pump to harness energy from the River Ness and solar panels to generate electricity. This system powers our production and also provides heating for our neighboring hotel and restaurant.
What makes your whisky and beer unique? Our products are “local through and through.” We use 100% locally grown and malted barley, Scottish oats, and water drawn directly from the River Ness. Our whisky is fermented using our own brewer’s ale yeast, creating a unique character you won’t find anywhere else.
Visiting & Accessibility
Is the distillery accessible for wheelchair users? Yes. While we are located in a conservation area, we are committed to accessibility. The Taproom and Energy Centre are on the ground level. For the production level (which has some grated flooring), we can provide protective flooring for guide dogs or assistance for those with mobility issues.
